Hokkaido Asian Buffet

Tuesday Lunch

Hokkaido Restaurant is a mixed-Asian buffet that opened earlier this year in Newport Beach just off of Dove and Birch. They serve a variety of food consisting of sushi, Korean BBQ, and commonly found Chinese dishes. The lunch price is $10.99, while dinner is $15.99, but what you find on in the dinner selection is dramatically better.

At lunch time, you will find a few varieties of sushi (I only saw 2 types of nigiri sushi today), 1 type of sashimi (today's option was Tilipia), and then a few rolls. Compared the dinner options, the lunch is quite disappointing. At dinner time, you will see tuna and salmon sashimi (their salmon is great), as well as many more rolls. The Mongolian BBQ section is availalbe at lunch and dinner. Here, you make your own combinations of noodles, several vegetables, and choice of meats. At night, you will also find short ribs, which is commonly known as Kalbi at a Korean BBQ. Dinner also includes crab legs, some sort of fish (salmon is common), and a clams or mussels.

For those who prefer American-styled Chinese foods, the lunch is perfect, with options such as black pepper chicken, egg rolls, and fried rice. There is also a limited dimsum selection which includes mini-sticky rice with red beans, baos, and shu mai (likely pork).

The atmosphere is certainly better than that of a Hometown buffet or the like, but I would not consider this any sort of first or second date restaurant. It works well for families because of the large tables and desert options for the kids.

Senior discounts are available, and for those who live in Newport Beach or Irvine, you may received a Hokkaido coupon in your weekly and monthly mailers such as ValPak and Clipper magazine. This could save you between 10% and 20%.

Clearly, I would recommend going for dinner as opposed to lunch.

Dine on...
